Saint-Ame climbing crags

There are 3 sites at “Les Grandes carrières”: Le Grand Rocher, Mont Roche Petit Rocher and Rocher du Stade (rue du stade), offering climbing from beginner to advanced level.

The rock: very compact granite, curiously colored in the overhanging part.
Height: 12 to 25 m for the upper slab, 5 to 15 m for the lower slab.
Routes: some thirty well-protected routes, some even over-protected. Some are marked and rated.
Grading: Predominance of medium routes.
Equipment: Sealed spindles plus a few routes equipped with pads. Double-point belays at the top of routes. Excellent overall equipment.
Type of climbing: Not very athletic routes (apart from the straight end), but sustained, requiring more finesse than muscular strength.

By car: from Remiremont, follow signs for Gérardmer. 1 km after the interchange, turn left onto Saint-Amé. 500 m after Celles, turn left onto rue de Meyvillers (the rocks are visible), then left again onto rue du Faing des Aulnées, or take rue de Meyvillers at the end of the Celles straight. Rue du Faing des Aulnées will then be on your right. Follow it up to the crossroads signposted Carrières on the right (wooden sign). Follow this road (steep!) to a flat area where you can park.

On foot: follow the path (S from the parking lot near a garbage can) down to the rocks (5min).
